Corn Maze Facts

  • 4 miles of pathway in a typical Bloomsbury Farm corn maze!
  • 200,000 planted corn seeds on 10-acre corn maze.

How big is a bushel?

  • A bushel of corn is measured in weight: 56 pounds (shelled corn after the husks and cobs are removed).

How many kernels are on one ear?

  • The number of kernels can vary from 500 to about 1200, but a typical ear would have about 800 kernels.

How tall is a corn plant?

  • A plant can be anywhere from 5 to 12 feet tall. Under good growing conditions, plants are usually 8 feet tall in mid-summer. A healthy corn plant's root system will reach 6 1/2 feet into the ground.

Why are there silks on corn?

  • Silks help pollen from the tassels fertilize the plant. Each silk will carry pollen to one site on a developing ear of corn. That makes it possible for that site to develop. If it's a hot summer, the silk can dry before all the sites on a corn cob fertilize, and there will be gaps on that ear of corn.
